I was wondering how everyone trains their weaves and how long it took you from start to finish? Do you use guides?Watching the 'Weaves' video at the link here really got me thinking about the different methods of teaching weaves.I've always used the channel method but have never used guides on them before, and I haven't gotten to see anyone train with weave-o-matic's in years!:) So what method have you found most successful in your weave training? I currently have 3 young dogs that are new to weaves and that seems a bit daunting! I've used 2 X 2 to train my last two collies. The method is great for getting the dogs to look for the correct entry from no matter where.

I have now also started to mix it up with channel weaves as well, just using the 2 X 2 weaves opened up. This gives the dog the confidence to increase their speed through the weaves. I can also use the 2 X 2 weaves closed up at the start to work on entries and then open up the final two or three units to build up the speed. I have found a very versatile piece of training equipment and couldn't imagine going back to anything else now. Hi Katelyn!I have trained our dogs with 6 straight poles with nets, which are quickly faded away. The nets are first changed to transparent guidewires and then all training aids are taken out.We practice all possible entries right from the beginning when the nets are helping the dog to succeed.

We also do all kinds of distractions: crosses before and after weaves, waving hands, running to different directions, adding lateral distance, moving to the opposite direction compared to the dog.I think you can teach the weaves to the dogs with different methods, some methods suit your dog better than others. I usually start all my dogs with the method that I have most experience with, but if I notice that my dog is struggling with this method then I wouldn't hesitate to change it. You can reach the same results with many different methods:).

I've had great success with the 2X2 method with my own dogs. I have, however, been quite frustrated trying to teach clients how to use this method so have been taking a good long look at different channel methods:) I was thinking about using the channel method for my young dog when he is ready to embark on weaves. I think he is really pretty perfectly suited to the 2X2's so we will stick with it. I do plan on 'blending' the two methods this time. I was thinking of this: shape 6 poles ALA 2X2's and then proof like mad with a slightly open channel.I dont know about anyone else but I think that in the past I have gotten caugh up in the THRILL of shaping the weaves so quickly and have not done sufficient proofing along the way. My youngster is an incredibly confident, driven worker so he's the perfect dog to throw many questions at and proof my skills.
